What you need to sell a digital product online

To sell a digital product online for free, you need four things: a product, a price plan, an order form and a way to deliver it after payment. A price plan is how an offer is paid for: a one-time payment, a subscription or a payment plan. An order form is the funnel step where the buyer pays.

These steps come from the systeme.io help center. For a course seller, the product can be the course itself; an ebook, a template or another file needs a delivery email, the thank-you page or a creator store.

Step 1: set up the product and its price plan

On the order form, choose Digital product: the form first asks whether you sell a digital or a physical product. Then create the price plan with the + icon, because the product cannot be saved without one. A payment plan needs a total number of payments, and a subscription price plan can offer the buyer an optional trial period.

Next, name the resources the buyer gets after paying: a course, a course bundle, a tag, a community or a calendar event. A file is not on that list. Deliver an ebook or a template one of three ways: an email attachment of up to 5 MB, a download link in the email, or a direct download link on the thank-you page.

The creator store has its own product type, Sell a digital download: you upload the file and edit the confirmation email that is sent automatically after payment.

Step 2: the checkout page, order bump and upsell

A two-step order form saves the buyer's contact details before the payment step. An order bump is a small checkbox offer on the order form that adds a complementary item before payment, and it can grant a course, a course bundle, a tag or a community. An upsell is a second offer after the first purchase that the buyer can accept without re-entering payment details.

Step 3: delivery, refunds and card processing

The delivery email is an automation rule that fires on the New sale trigger. Make a test purchase through your payment page before you share the link, and note that the help center says a test purchase may incur additional fees.

Refunds are made from the Transactions page, partial refunds are not supported, and whether a refund is possible is up to your payment gateway. The systeme.io transaction fee is 0%, so card processing is the extra cost: Stripe or PayPal charge it on each sale.

Selling for free: the limits to plan around
